How Long Should a Wedding Video Be?
A highlight film works best at three to five minutes; the full film runs much longer. Here is what each length is for, and how to choose for your day.
The short answer: a wedding highlight film is best at three to five minutes, short enough that people watch it to the end and share it. The full wedding film is a different thing — it is meant to be long, around three quarters of an hour, so the ceremony, the speeches and your family are all there to come back to. Most couples are happiest with both, plus a short reel for Instagram.
Length is not really the question. The better question is who will watch each film, and where. Once you know that, the right length for each one follows.
The three films most couples end up with
The social reel: under a minute
Vertical, made for Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp status. It is a taste of the day, not the story of it. This is the one your cousins will repost the week after.
The highlight film: three to five minutes
The cinematic version. It tells the story of the day in order — getting ready, the Nikkah or ceremony, the entrance, the moments in between — and ends before anyone reaches for their phone.
The full film: around 45 minutes
The record. Longer stretches of the ceremony, the speeches and the dua, the family moments, the entrance in full. This is the film you watch with your parents, and the one your children will watch one day. It is the runtime most of our couples prefer for a polished full film.
Why a highlight film should stay short
A highlight film is cut to music or, for a no-music edit, to voices and the natural sound of the day. Its job is to make people feel something quickly. Past five or six minutes it starts to drag for anyone who was not there, and it becomes hard to share — most people will not finish a long video on their phone.
Short does not mean thin. A good editor chooses the moments that carry the day: the quiet look before the Nikkah, a parent's face during the vows, the room on its feet for the entrance. Three minutes of the right moments says more than fifteen of everything.
Choose the length by who will watch it. Short for sharing, long for keeping.
When a longer full film makes sense
- Your ceremony has parts you want kept whole — the Quran recitation, the khutbah, the vows or the signing.
- Speeches matter to your family, and you want every one of them, not a line from each.
- Elders and relatives abroad could not be there, and will want to watch the day as it happened.
- It is a multi-day wedding — Mehndi or Holud, Nikkah, Walima — and each event deserves its own chapter.
If you want the whole ceremony uncut, or a longer documentary-style film, ask for it at booking. It takes more editing time, so it is planned in from the start rather than added later.
How to decide for your wedding
Think about who will watch
Friends on Instagram, family on the sofa, or both? That tells you whether you need a reel, a highlight film, a full film, or all three.
Name the moments you cannot lose
Write down the two or three parts of the day you would be heartbroken to see cut short. Those belong in the full film, complete.
Decide on music early
If you would like a no-music edit, say so before the day. Your videographer will then record cleaner sound from the Nikkah, the speeches and the recitation, because the film will lean on them.
Watch real examples
Watching a few finished films is the quickest way to know what feels right. A five-minute highlight and a full ceremony film feel very different on screen.
What about a same-day edit?
A same-day edit is a very short film cut during the event and shown before the night ends, often at the reception. It is a lovely surprise for guests, but it is an extra, not a replacement — the highlight and full films are still edited properly afterwards.

Questions people ask
How long should a wedding highlight video be?
Three to five minutes is ideal. It is long enough to tell the story of the day and short enough that people watch to the end and share it.
How long is a full wedding film?
Usually around 45 minutes. It keeps longer parts of the ceremony, speeches and family moments that a highlight film has to leave out.
Can we get the whole ceremony unedited?
Yes. Full ceremony coverage or a longer documentary-style film can be added; it needs extra editing time, so ask for it when you book.
Can a wedding video be made without music?
Yes. A no-music edit uses voices, the recitation, the Nikkah and the natural sound of the day instead of songs, and works for highlight films, full films and reels.
