How to Film the Quran Recitation at Your Nikkah

The recitation is often the most moving minute of the whole film. Here is how to make sure it is recorded properly, and kept with the respect it deserves.

The short answer: give the Qari their own microphone, agree on where they will sit before the day, and ask your videographer to keep the recitation whole in the film rather than cutting it under music. Do those three things and the recitation will be the part of the film your family plays again and again.

When a Qari opens a Nikkah, the room goes quiet. It is one of the few moments in a wedding day when nobody is talking, nobody is moving, and everyone is listening. On camera it can be breathtaking — or it can be a muffled voice behind the noise of a hall's air conditioning. The difference is almost entirely planning.

Why the audio matters more than the picture

Viewers forgive a slightly soft shot. They do not forgive sound they cannot hear. A camera's built-in microphone sits several metres away, pointed at the room, and records the room: chairs, children, the hum of the venue. The recitation itself ends up thin and distant.

So the single most useful thing you can do is make sure the Qari's voice is recorded close to them, on its own.

What to arrange before the day

01

Tell your videographer who is reciting, and when

Put it in the running order with a time. If the Qari arrives with the Imam or the family, make sure someone is told to introduce them to the film crew before the ceremony starts.

02

Ask for a dedicated microphone

A small clip-on microphone, or a recorder placed on the table in front of the Qari, captures the voice cleanly. If the hall has a sound system, ask whether your videographer can take a feed from the mixing desk as a second copy.

03

Agree on where they will sit

Facing the room, with light on their face, and not directly under a speaker. A quick walk-through with the venue on the day avoids a last-minute shuffle.

04

Check the Qari is comfortable being filmed

Most are, but some prefer not to be shown up close. It is a simple question to ask in advance, and a respectful one.

During the recitation

  • Keep the room still: ask your MC to request silence and phones on mute before the Qari begins.
  • No camera movement across the Qari's line of sight. A good crew films from the sides and stays put.
  • Let it run to the end. The recitation should be recorded in full even if only part appears in the highlight film.

In the edit: keeping it whole, and keeping it respectful

Many couples ask us for a no-music edit, where the film is carried by voices, the recitation, the Nikkah itself and the natural sound of the day. Done well, it feels more personal, not less. The recitation then becomes the emotional centre of the film rather than something laid under a song.

If you do want a version with music elsewhere in the film, ask that the recitation is never mixed with it. The two should not overlap.

Plan the microphone, plan the seat, and let the recitation run in full. That is most of it.

If you are planning a Nikkah or Walima and would like this handled from the start, our Muslim-friendly coverage includes no-music edits and modesty-aware filming, and we are always happy to talk it through.

Questions people ask

Can a wedding video have no music at all?

Yes. A no-music edit uses the recitation, the Nikkah, speeches and the natural sound of the day instead of songs. Many Muslim couples prefer it, and it is a standard option with us.

Does the Qari need their own microphone?

It is strongly recommended. A clip-on microphone or a small recorder near the Qari gives clear sound; the camera's own microphone alone usually sounds distant.

Will the whole recitation be in the film?

It is recorded in full. The highlight film may use part of it, and the full-length film can include it complete — just tell your videographer which you prefer.

Can you arrange a Qari for our Nikkah?

Yes. We work with Qaris and Imams through our partner services and can help you arrange one.
